The Saga of the Shoes
Shoes. To some they are a necessary evil; to others, a display of individual style. I fall closer to the “necessary evil” side. I’m a native southern girl who would much rather go barefoot whenever possible. Besides, for me shoe shopping is one of the more traumatic experiences I have in the year: I refuse to buy an uncomfortable shoe just because it looks good, and I have a hard time justifying more than $40 spent on a pair (except running shoes: they don’t count), so there is obviously a lot of frustration when I have to buy new shoes. Because of this, I need your help.
Yesterday I walked about a mile roundtrip to pick up some paperwork for one of my bosses (H: have I mentioned that you owe me?). No biggie…why would I drive someplace that’s only half a mile away, right? Later in the day I noticed that the outsole (the rubber part on the bottom) of the heel of my right shoe was gone (yes, I looked it up: who uses “outsole” in their daily life other than cobblers??…do they even exist anymore?). So I’m thinking “Great: emergency trip to the shoe store tonight” because I only have one pair of shoes that work with pants (Really. I have two pairs of dress shoes, two pairs of boots, & one pair of pants shoes…unless you count the worn-out ones that I wouldn’t want to wear but can’t bring myself to throw away because they’re still in one piece.). Not exactly on my list of fun things to do after work, but I was OK with it because they were getting kind of worn anyway.
Plans changed. I realized, with some help from a co-worker (thank you, Kelly
), that maybe I could find the missing piece & put it back together, and it just so happened that I was going to be going back to drop off paperwork where I had been previously that morning…and let’s face it: not too many people actually walk on that stretch of West McBee anyway (& is there anyone who collects broken heels?? Of course not!). Long story short (too late): I found it and managed to get it back on, & my shoe is not too much worse for the wear.
Here’s where you come in: do you think I should still replace my shoes? They are kind of worn, and there’s a good chance my outsole will fall out again. So: what do you think?
