Road Race
On Saturday, November 8th, I ran in the first annual Caine Halter Lungs for Life 5K Run/Walk, a road race to benefit lung cancer research. This was the second road race I have participated in, and I realized that I actually enjoy road races! If you have read my original running post, you will know that I generally do not enjoy running in races, but this was different.
The race started out kind of rough. There were too many people and I was too much in the middle of the pack to start out running. The first thing to do was get through the crowd to the people who were actually running; but I wasn’t the only person trying to do so, as a result there was the potential for frustration waiting for a spot to open up to race through while at the same time hoping someone else didn’t spot the same opening and get there first. It was actually quit amusing watching all the “runners” (as opposed to walkers) head toward the same opening & then have to patiently wait to go through one at a time without knocking each other over.
Once that was out of the way; the fun part came. “Drafting“ (OK; so it wasn’t technically “drafting,” but, it was close enough). I found a person or a group of people who looked like they would be going about my comfortable speed, and just kind of ran behind them. Then, once I realized their pace was too slow, I would look for another person to follow. This worked out really well for me; I did my best time ever on a 5K; under 25:15.
So, overall it was a really fun race, I’d definitely do it again, and I hope to run in other road races; it’s fun.
