I Know Every Pregnancy is Different, but Why Did No One Tell Me About This?? (1st tri)

Yeah: “Every pregnancy is different.”  I got it; everyone says it; it’s true.  My question is: why does everyone tell you about some things (”Eat saltines as soon as you wake up to keep from feeling sick.”), but no one told me about these??

This article is from me to any women out there in their first trimester for the first time or, whose pregnancy this time around is different than it was before.

1. You don’t just feel hot when you’re pregnant, and it doesn’t just happen when you’re huge.

Everyone knows that, by the end of a woman’s pregnancy, in addition to all the other annoyances she deals with, a woman stays warm/hot pretty much all the time.  Yep: big baby + larger mommy = HOT!! If you didn’t know that, you must never have met any pregnant women and/or been hiding under a rock all of you life (or you could be a man, but then you probably aren’t reading this).  Well, this one some of you might have read in a couple of places: it doesn’t quite rank in the “no one ever told me this” category.  Guess what: if you’re pregnant, you’re more sensitive to temperatures.  Period.  That means when it’s hot, you’re burning up; when it’s chilly, you can’t put on enough layers.  There seems to be a 2-3 degree area I’m comfortable in right now.  Other than that I’m freezing or burning up.

2.  ”Pregnant Nose” can come and go, just like morning sickness.

There are many pregnancy symptoms that can come and go: morning sickness isn’t the only one!  My experience with morning sickness has probably been easier than many, but mine has come, gone, & come back again.  Guess what?  So do other things.  ”The girls” aren’t consistently sore, my fatigue level varies from day to day & isn’t always dependent on how much rest I got, and the most annoying one is what I call “pregnant nose”.  That’s when everything smells 10 times as strongly as usual.  It bugs me to death!!  Fortunately, I’ve really only had it a few day, but I had been under the impression that most pregnant women got it for their entire term.  So glad that’s not true!

3.  Morning Sickness - Puking DOES make you feel better!

As previously mentioned, I’ve had a decently easy time with morning sickness so far: haven’t had it the whole time and I’ve only talked to Ralph once, but that’s where I learned this wonderful truth!  I don’t know about you, but I hate feeling sick to my stomach.  I haven’t had a lot at all in my life, but it bugs me to death.  Especially when you have the flu, and you don’t know if doing something about it will make you feel better, or just put that bad taste in your mouth & wear you out even more (I’m sorry, but it’s a lot of work!).  Naturally, being the logical person that I am, I assumed that, since it’s hormones making you feel sick (well, maybe: apparently they’re not really sure), coughing your guts out wouldn’t make you feel any better…until the day that it was just too bad to keep down. Instant relief.  Well…you know…once it was all over.  Best pregnancy discovery ever!  ….but why didn’t anyone tell me this before????

4. Your hormones are going to make you act crazy, and, whether or not you know that it’s the hormones doesn’t matter: you’re still going to act crazy.

I’m usually a pretty self-controlled person: I keep it in and I keep it under control.   However, I have had already had two what I call “pregnancy breakdowns” so far while pregnant.  Mine so far have been tears.  The first time I was at work, the worst place it could possibly happen, and I could tell it was coming.  I’d had a rough morning, disappointing lunch, and my husband had just texted me something frustrating.  I put everything into keeping the tears back, but they still came.

5.  That super-hungry feeling that you might get instead of morning sickness can be just as aggravating.

OK.  This one’s probably just me venting.  I said it before: I’ve had it easy when it comes to morning sickness, but when it isn’t around I’m hungry all the time, and it bugs me just as much.  How am I supposed to eat only 300 additional calories per day when my stomach, every two hours, acts like it hasn’t eaten all day??

Well.  That’s it for me (for now).  So what random things have you discovered while pregnant that you wish someone had told you before?
